  1.       Children with the inherited form often
  2.   develop tumors in both eyes and may develop
  3.   other malignancies later in life, such as
  4.   sarcomas, leukemia or melanoma. 
  5. ‚Ä¢ In children with the spontaneous form, the
  6.   tumor cells also have defects involving both
  7.   RB genes, but these defects have not been
  8.   inherited. These children usually have only
  9.   one tumor and are not predisposed to develop
  10.   other cancers.
  11.       If detected early, both inherited and
  12.   spontaneous forms of retinoblastoma are
  13.   curable with radiotherapy , and vision can be
  14.   preserved. Genetic probes can detect the
  15.   abnormal RB gene, identifying children at risk.
  16.   These children need careful clinical monitoring
  17.   and frequent eye examinations.
